On July 9th 1986 Roe Green Village was honored by a royal visit. Her Majesty the Queen Mother, patron of The London Garden Society, graced the area with her presence.
The highlight of the visit was the planting of a tree on Roe Green. Local residents, particularly members of the Roe Green Village Residents Association, were thrilled to witness this historic moment. “We were all very nervous before she arrived,” said Mrs Doris Lynne, the association’s secretary. “We just didn’t want anything going wrong on a day like that.”
The Queen Mother also visited the immaculate gardens of Frank and Rose Metcalfe in Goldsmith Lane. The couple, chosen by The London Garden Society for the royal visit, were overjoyed to showcase their horticultural efforts. “It was the biggest honor I have ever been accorded,” said Mrs Metcalfe. “The Queen Mother was very interested and obviously knowledgeable about gardening.” She added that the gardens were a family affair, with her husband and son Frank contributing to their beauty.
The Queen Mother’s visit to Roe Green was a memorable occasion for the local community, leaving a lasting impression on the residents.
